Kōnane

Hawaiian game with jumping stones, slightly generalised.

Rules

Board. A rectangular board. Each square is either empty, or else it is filled with either a black or a white stone (not both).

Left moves. Pick a black stone and jump over an adjacent white stone onto an empty square, removing the jumped stone. Left may continue to jump (with the same stone in the same direction) as long as there are white stones and empty spaces to facilitate it.

Right moves. Pick a white stone and jump over an adjacent black stone onto an empty square, removing the jumped stone. Right may continue to jump (with the same stone in the same direction) as long as there are black stones and empty spaces to facilitate it.

Convention. Classical (normal or misère play).

Notes

This is a slight generalisation of the traditional Hawaiian game, which requires a specific setup to play. Notably, no two stones of the same colour can ever be adjacent in the original game, whereas they can in this variant. Berlekamp dubbed this as Portuguese Kōnane.
